You Really Can Make Your Dreams Come True – Zoe’s Story

Zoe is my wonderful client.  I first met her 25 years ago and she’s still one of my treasured clients (of course – all my clients are treasured!).  

When I first met Zoe, she was working in a school.  Unfortunately, Zoe’s whole life was suddenly turned upside down after her difficult marriage ended in divorce.  To add to that, Zoe’s teenage daughter wasn’t easy – and Zoe found she was struggling with everything, including her finances.  As you can imagine, Zoe had a lot on her plate – and to cap it all, she’d never really dealt with her finances before because her domineering ex-husband used to take care of the bills and anything else finance-related.  The bills were mounting up and she had no idea about money-management – her ex had destroyed her confidence as well so when she came to me, she was feeling very concerned about her future.

It’s More Than Just Finance!

Even at our very first meeting I could see that Zoe was lacking in confidence.  As well as organising her finances, I was determined to help boost her self-esteem but first – I needed to sort out the basics!

The first thing I did was look at her day-to-day bills and advise her on how to manage those.  Once she knew how to look after them, I wanted to move onto find out what Zoe was looking for – personally and financially.  As a Life Planner as well as a Financial Advisor, it’s more than just finance, and I wanted to help her wherever I could.

Zoe told me she didn’t want to be on her own. She wanted to meet someone to share her life with but as her first marriage had been such a disaster, she found it hard to trust and this struck a chord.  Of course, I’m not a dating agency but I wanted to help her to meet someone else.  It wasn’t the first time I’d heard this type of story – I have had lots of single clients over the years who’ve all longed to meet their partner in life and often, just by listening and making gentle suggestions, it happens.  I’ve seen many of my clients move forwards with better finances and a partner to share it all with!  The key is listening – that’s the part that’s so important and it’s what I do.  Even when there’s a gap in the conversation, I take that as an opportunity to ask if there’s anything else I can help with.  That’s exactly how I discovered that Zoe wanted to meet a new partner.

During our conversations, we talked about where Zoe could go to possibly meet someone and guess what?  Soon enough, Zoe met Mike – Mike is still Zoe’s partner today and Zoe is happy!  Mike’s a down-to-earth type, he’s a miner and when they first met, they automatically clicked!

A Bright Future With Mike!

So Zoe and Mike became a couple and shortly after, they became my joint clients.  Working with them, I continued to ask them what they wanted out of their life together.  I discovered that they longed to up sticks and live by the sea.  Mike didn’t want to continue working down the mines, but both of them couldn’t see how they could turn that dream into a reality.  However – of course I was there, and I was determined to help them do it.  So, we worked out a plan.

Then just two years later – Zoe and Mike saw their dream come true when they finally made the move from the West Midlands to Cornwall.  They bought a beautiful bungalow just 150 yards from the sea.  Mike got himself a job at the harbour and Zoe started working in a local school. They’ve been there for fifteen years now and couldn’t be happier, and neither could I!

I’m delighted that I helped to make their dreams come true and their life today is rich in so many ways – and I don’t just mean financially!  I still advise them, despite the distance with Zoom it makes it much easier these days to hold online meetings.

Transforming Lives

Today, the couple are looking forward to a comfortable retirement.  They tell me that I transformed their lives.  I know I have, but really, if you ask me how I did it, I see it as just organising their basic finances, then exploring what they wanted out of life – and next, putting in an achievable plan to help them reach their goal.

Oh, and I listened.  That’s one of the most important things that I do, and listening is really important – it’s key.

As Zoe told me, “I was in a mess when I met you and you have changed my life!  I never want to be without you.”

I can assure her that Interface will be here for her for as long as she needs us (as long as my son and I are still here of course!).
