Defined Benefit Pension transfers our procedure for processing

For many clients their final salary pension is a huge part of their retirement planning and transferring may significantly affect their lifestyle. On our website we state that a DB transfer is only the right route for one in ten clients and perhaps that is overstating the numbers and it could be much lower, perhaps even one in fifty. However, for the clients for whom it is correct to transfer they need the advice as part of their lifestyle financial planning.

Illustrates that the administration involved in providing defined benefit transfer advice is administratively intensive and in order to provide our clients with an efficient service we have engaged Pension Works to help us with the processing of DB Transfer advice.

To initiate an investigation into your pension options simply complete sign and return the Pensions Works Authority. This authority can be filled in on screen or printed and filled in by hand. When you have signed it, please send it to us using our business reply address below. Most DB pension providers will insist on a ‘wet’ signature so you need to send us the hard copy however if you scan and send us a digital copy, investigation can start immediately. This can be especially important if you already have your transfer value CETV because it is usually only valid for three months.

There is no charge for this initial investigation and if you proceed to Full Advice the fees are detailed below. You can stop the process at any time before you have signed the fee agreement and there will be no charge.

Our decision to engage a third party to process DB Transfers not only frees up our time and enables us to devote our time to lifestyle financial planning, but it also helps you to obtain DB Transfer advice efficiently and cost effectively. Our Third Party is set up to manage this advice very efficiently, unlike us they do not charge for the Abridged Advice stage, and if you wish to proceed to the Full Advice stage, you will sign a fee agreement committing you to the fee. Their charges are based on your pension balance – first £50k = 3% and all remaining = 2.5%. Min fee payable £2495 & Max fee payable £14,950.
Furthermore, whereas we are required to engage O&M to prepare the necessary TVAS report at a cost of £450 which is normally charged to our clients, our third party have their own facilities for obtaining the necessary TVAS report which represents another saving to our clients.

In order to process your DB transfer full information about any additional pensions will be required, even if you have excluded them from your advice process. This information is required in order to run the research at the Full Advice stage and your Defined Contribution (DC) pensions must be considered as a possible destination for transfer. We will assist the process by passing over as much information as we can in order to avoid duplication and to speed up the process.

On completion of your Defined Benefit Transfer we have an arrangement in place with our third-party for them to pay us a percentage of their fee which means that you do not have to pay us for our assistance with your DB Transfer.

After completion of your defined benefit transfer the management of your pension will be transferred to Interface Financial Planning for us to incorporate that into your lifestyle financial planning if that is what you wish us to do.

Our primary function is providing lifestyle financial planning

Interface Financial Planning has advised and helped our clients with their Defined Benefit (Final Salary) Pensions since 1995. We are delighted that all our clients are happy with our advice, and we have never received a complaint. However, our primary purpose for maintaining our FCA permissions as a Pension Transfer Specialist is to assist our ongoing life planning clients with their financial planning.

We are one of the declining numbers of Pension Transfer Specialists (PTS) who are authorised by the FCA and who have Professional Indemnity insurance on normal terms. The number of professional firms providing specialist DB advice has shrunk from about 3,000 in 2018 to around 1500 at the start of 2021 to 1,160 at the end of 2021 according to the figures from the FCA. Furthermore, a joint report from Aviva and LCP published recently stated that one in three of the remaining PTS said they had either already decided to stop providing DB advice or that they were unsure if they would still be providing transfer advice in a year's time. Therefore, it appears that by the end of this year they may be as few as 750 PTS operating, a reduction of 75% since 2018.

One of the results of this reduction in pension transfer specialists means that people who need Defined Benefit pension advice have a declining number of places to get advice and we have experienced an increasing number of enquiries from clients who are asking for our help. While one of our values is to always help people when they need us, we must balance our primary function of providing lifestyle financial planning. We have no intention of moving in the direction of becoming full time DB transfer specialists and we do not intend that providing DB transfer advice will take us away from our core function.
